ABSTRACT
The emergence of the AI chatbot ChatGPT in November 2022 has garnered significant attention across various disciplines. Despite its widespread use in different sectors, research on its application in libraries, particularly in the medical field, remains limited.
Objective. Many aspects of ChatGPT's potential use in medical libraries are underexplored. This review aims to synthesize the current knowledge on this subject, identify gaps, and encourage further research in this area.
Methods. Utilizing Cooper's integrative review method, this study includes a comprehensive analysis of existing literature on ChatGPT and its potential applications in library settings.
Results: A systematic search of literature across various databases yielded 166 articles, of which 30 were excluded due to irrelevance. Following abstract reviews and methodological assessments, 136 articles were selected. The CASP qualitative checklist further narrowed the selection to 29 articles, forming the basis for this research. The literature analysis reveals diverse applications of ChatGPT in medical libraries, including assisting users in finding relevant medical information, responding to queries, providing recommendations, and facilitating access to resources. Potential challenges and ethical considerations related to ChatGPT's use in this context are also highlighted.
Conclusion. This review provides insights into ChatGPT's application in medical libraries and related considerations. The integration of ChatGPT into medical library services promises to improve information retrieval and user experience, benefiting both medical library users and the broader medical community.
